Options per network
The extra settings each network offers, such as a first comment, a Reel, a poll or a YouTube title, and how to set them differently for each account.
On this page
Options per network are the extras each network offers, like a first comment, a Reel, a thread or a poll, and you can set them differently for each account.
Which plan: All plans.
Where to find it#
In the Create Post window, once you have picked your channels, press Customize for each network at the bottom (with only one network picked, the button says Options for that network, for example Options for YouTube).
Each network you picked gets a tab beside All networks. A fix label on a tab means something there needs fixing before you can schedule; custom means it has its own text.
Everything is optional unless it is marked Required. The defaults work fine.
You can also turn the common extras on from the Add row under the text box: Poll, PDF, Link, Thread, First comment, Reel and Story. A button shows only when a network you picked supports it. See Create a post.
How to set options#
- In the Create Post window, pick your channels and write your post.
- Press Customize for each network, then a network's tab.
- Change what you want. The common options are at the top. Press More options for the rest.
- If an Options for section says Needs one thing, fill in what it lists. You cannot schedule until you do.
- Repeat for the other tabs, then press Back, or schedule straight from the tab.
How to set different options for each account#
When you pick two or more accounts on the same network, for example two YouTube channels or a shop and a personal Instagram, you choose how their options work.
- Press that network's tab. At the top it says, for example, 2 YouTube accounts.
- Choose Same for all or Per account.
- Same for all: one set of options for every account on that network. Lists like Pinterest boards and YouTube playlists come from the first account.
- Per account: each account gets its own section, Options for YouTube · your channel name.
- Set each account's options. For example, one channel posts a Short while the other posts a normal video, or each Pinterest account pins to its own board.
The options are saved with the post for each account. When you reopen the post, it opens in Per account again. Going back to Same for all keeps the first account's options for all of them.

Each network's page in Networks explains its options in more detail.
Reels and Stories#
Facebook and Instagram can post as a Reel or a Story. Press Reel or Story in the Add row, or pick the Post type in the network's tab.
- A Reel takes one vertical video (9:16), and no photos. On Instagram it is 3 to 90 seconds.
- A Story takes one photo or one video (up to 60 seconds) and disappears after 24 hours. Your text and first comment are not posted with a Story.
If your post has photos or several files, the Reel or Story button is greyed out. Hover over it to see what to remove.
Threads for long text#
On X, Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon you can turn on Post as a thread. Social9 splits long text into numbered posts that each fit the network's limit. You can edit each part, Add part, or Split again from main text.
If your text is too long and you have not turned threads on, the section tells you. Turn it on, or write shorter text for that network.
First comments#
A first comment is posted as a comment right after the post goes live. It is a good place for a link or extra hashtags. It works on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and X. Press First comment in the Add row, then type it in the network's tab.
On X the first comment is a reply to your own post, so it counts as one more X post in your monthly allowance. It works on single posts: in a thread, add it as the last part. Instagram and Facebook Stories cannot have a first comment. YouTube cannot add one to a private video or a video made for kids.
Polls#
LinkedIn, X and Mastodon can add a poll. Press Poll in the Add row, or turn on Add a poll in the network's tab. A poll needs 2 to 4 choices and cannot have photos or video.
| Network | Rules | How long it runs |
|---|---|---|
| A question up to 140 characters. Choices up to 30 characters. No PDF with it | 1 day, 3 days, 1 week or 2 weeks | |
| X | Choices up to 25 characters | 5 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days |
| Mastodon | Choose Allow multiple choices to let people pick more than one. Your server sets the longest a choice can be | 5 minutes, 1 hour, 6 hours, 1 day, 3 days or 7 days |
Social9 won't let you schedule a poll with an empty choice or fewer than 2 choices.
PDF document on LinkedIn#
On LinkedIn you can share a PDF as a document that people swipe through, like a carousel.
- Pick a LinkedIn account and press PDF in the Add row (or turn on Share a PDF as a document carousel).
- Press Upload PDF and choose the file. Or paste a public link to a PDF that ends in
.pdf. - Type a Document title. It shows on the carousel. If you upload a file, the title starts as the file name.
The file must be a PDF and up to 5 MB. An upload is kept in your Social9 media. A PDF post cannot also have photos, video, a poll or a link card.
Good to know#
- On X, a first comment counts as one more X post in your monthly allowance.
- Some options need the right account: a custom YouTube thumbnail needs a verified YouTube channel, and Pinterest needs a board.
- If the post has a time set, YouTube can publish the video itself at that time.
