Threads API 2026: Reply Approvals, Instagram Stories Cross-Sharing and a 5-Link Limit

Meta's Threads API added reply approvals, cross-sharing to Instagram Stories, GIPHY GIFs and ghost posts, and caps posts at 5 links. What schedulers need.

What changed

The Threads API can now do much of what the Threads app does. Posts can require reply approval, cross-share to a linked Instagram account as a Story, and include GIPHY GIFs, spoilers and long text attachments. Meta rounded these up in a developer blog post on April 14, 2026. Two less visible changes can break existing workflows: posts with more than 5 links now fail, and Tenor GIFs are no longer supported.

Here are the changes most relevant to publishing tools, with the dates given in the official Threads changelog:

December 22, 2025Posts with more than 5 links fail with THREADS_API__LINK_LIMIT_EXCEEDED (announced December 8)Link-heavy posts are rejected at publish time

Cross-sharing to Instagram Stories

According to Meta's Share to Instagram Stories documentation, a tool sets crossreshare_to_ig (or crossreshare_to_ig_dark_mode for a dark-mode Story) on the Threads media container. It works with text, image, video and carousel posts and needs the threads_share_to_instagram permission. If the user has no linked Instagram account, the Story fails but the Threads post still publishes. The publish response reports crossreshare_to_ig_status as SUCCESS or FAILED. The resulting Story expires after 24 hours like any other.

Reply approvals

Per Meta's reply management docs, a post created with enable_reply_approvals=true hides replies until the author approves them. Pending replies come from a /pending_replies endpoint, where they can be approved or ignored.

Richer post types

The April 14 blog post also lists text attachments of up to 10,000 characters with basic formatting, spoiler tags for text, images and video (carousels included), and ghost posts that archive after 24 hours.

Who it affects

  • Brands that use Threads for links and roundups. A post that lists six product links or articles will now fail through the API. It won't be trimmed for you.
  • Teams posting on Threads and Instagram. The Stories cross-share gives a quick extra placement for posts already scheduled for Threads.
  • Accounts that get trolled or spammed. Reply approvals can now be part of the publishing step instead of cleanup after the fact.
  • Anyone with GIFs in saved templates or evergreen queues. Content built on Tenor needs to switch to GIPHY.

What to do if you schedule posts

  1. Check your queue for posts with more than 5 links. Split roundups into a short thread, or link to one landing page that collects the rest. The Threads thread generator can help turn a link list into a thread.
  2. Replace Tenor GIFs in templates and recurring posts with GIPHY equivalents.
  3. Decide per post whether to cross-share to Stories. Remember the Story lasts only 24 hours, so time it for when your Instagram audience is active. See our best times to post guide.
  4. Don't assume the Story went out. If your tool exposes it, check the cross-share status. A failed Story doesn't stop the Threads post, so the failure is easy to miss.
  5. Use reply approvals for sensitive launches, such as pricing changes, controversial topics or giveaways, and make sure someone is assigned to review pending replies.
  6. Check which features your scheduler supports. Many of these are opt-in API features, so tools roll them out at different speeds. See the Threads channel page for Social9's Threads support, and the scheduling guide for building a multi-network calendar.

FAQ

How many links can a Threads post have via the API?

Five. Since December 22, 2025, posts with more than 5 links fail with the THREADS_API__LINK_LIMIT_EXCEEDED error.

Can a scheduling tool share a Threads post to Instagram Stories?

Yes, if the tool has implemented it and has the threads_share_to_instagram permission, and the Threads account is linked to Instagram (Meta docs).

What happened to Tenor GIFs on Threads?

Meta added GIPHY support on February 27, 2026 and said Tenor API support would be sunset by March 31, 2026.
