X API Pay-Per-Use in 2026: Link Posts Now Cost 13x More Than Plain Posts

X's API moved to pay-per-use in February 2026 and now charges $0.20 per post with a URL vs $0.015 for plain posts. What it means for scheduled X posts.

What changed

X's developer API no longer runs on flat monthly plans for most new builders: according to X's official developer changelog, X API Pay-Per-Use pricing launched on Feb 6, 2026, with credits bought upfront and deducted per request. A follow-up pricing update dated Apr 16, 2026, effective April 20, 2026 set the cost of creating a post at $0.015, and $0.20 for a post that contains a URL. For anyone publishing to X through a tool, that makes link posts the most expensive thing you can schedule.

The changes came in several steps over 2026. All of them are listed in X's developer changelog:

Date (as stated by X)ChangeWhy schedulers care

Feb 23, 2026Programmatic replies through POST /2/tweets allowed only when the original author "summoned" the replier (by @mentioning or quoting the account); self-serve tiers onlyAuto-reply and engagement-bot workflows break
Apr 16, 2026 (effective April 20, 2026)Post creation $0.015; posts containing a URL $0.20; summoned replies $0.01; Following, Likes and Quote-Posts removed from all self-serve tiersLink posts cost about 13x a plain post

The pricing that matters for publishing

From X's pricing page, the write prices are:

  • Post: Create — $0.015 per request
  • Post: Create (with URL) — $0.200 per request
  • Post: Create (summoned reply) — $0.010 per request

On the read side, posts cost $0.005 per resource returned, and pay-per-use plans are capped at 3 million post reads per monthly billing cycle, with Enterprise required beyond that. X also notes that prices are subject to change and that the Developer Console shows current rates.

Video limits now depend on the posting account

The Sep 1, 2026 changelog entry clarifies that video limits are tied to the authenticated user's X Premium or verified status, not the developer plan. Default accounts can post video up to 20 minutes and 8 GB; Premium or verified accounts up to 125 minutes and 16 GB. A video over the posting user's cap returns a 403 error ("This user is not allowed to post a video longer than N minutes").

Who it affects

  • Brands and agencies that schedule X posts through third-party tools. Every scheduled post is now a metered API call for your tool, which may adjust plans or limits in response.
  • Accounts that lead with links. News publishers, blogs, ecommerce stores and newsletters that push a URL in almost every post are hit hardest, since the URL rate is more than 13 times the plain-post rate.
  • Anyone running automated replies. Since February 23, a tool cannot reply programmatically to someone who has not mentioned or quoted your account first (on self-serve tiers).
  • Teams posting long-form video. Unverified accounts can't publish video over 20 minutes through the API.

What to do if you schedule posts

  1. Audit your link ratio. Count how many of last month's scheduled X posts carried a URL. That's the main cost driver.
  2. Make link-free posts carry the message. Write X posts that stand on their own: the takeaway, a stat, a short thread. Keep the link for the posts where the click really matters. The AI tweet generator can help draft standalone versions.
  3. Don't build workflows around automated replies. Plan for manual replies or replies only to people who mentioned you. Treat "auto-thank everyone who engages" style automations as gone.
  4. Check video length against the posting account. If a client's account is not Premium or verified, trim videos to under 20 minutes before scheduling to avoid a failed publish.
  5. Re-check your mix of networks. If X link posts become costly or limited in your tool, shift link-heavy distribution elsewhere and keep X for conversation. Our scheduling guide covers how to plan a multi-network mix, and the X channel page shows how Social9 supports X.

FAQ

Is the X API free in 2026?

Not for most developers. X's Feb 6, 2026 announcement, as summarised in the changelog, says public utility apps keep free access and recently active legacy Free users got a one-time $10 voucher. Everyone else pays per use.

How much does it cost to post to X through the API?

$0.015 per post, $0.20 if the post contains a URL, and $0.01 for a summoned reply, per X's pricing page.

Can scheduling tools still auto-reply on X?

Only when the original author summoned the account by @mentioning it or quoting one of its posts, per the Feb 23, 2026 update. Enterprise access is not affected.
