To schedule a YouTube Short, upload it in YouTube Studio, go to the Visibility step, choose Schedule, then set the date, time and time zone and press Schedule. It is free and built into YouTube. If you post the same vertical video to TikTok, Instagram or LinkedIn too, a social media scheduler lets you upload it once and queue it for every network at the same time.
This guide covers both ways, what YouTube counts as a Short, and a simple weekly routine for creators and small businesses who want a steady flow of Shorts without opening YouTube every day.
What counts as a YouTube Short?
Before you schedule anything, make sure YouTube will treat your video as a Short. According to YouTube's Help Center, a Short is a video with a square or vertical aspect ratio, up to three minutes long.
A few details worth knowing:
- The three-minute limit is fairly new. YouTube says it applies to videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024, on standard channels (YouTube Help). Older Shorts were limited to one minute.
- Copyright matters more on longer Shorts. YouTube blocks any Short over one minute that has an active copyright claim, so it cannot be played or recommended until the claim is resolved (same page). If you use licensed music, check it before you schedule.
- Wide videos stay long-form. If you do not want a clip treated as a Short, export it at 16:9.
In practice: export at 9:16 (1080 x 1920 is the usual size), keep it under three minutes, and you are set. Our image and video size guide lists the specs for every network if you are cutting one video for several platforms.
How to schedule a YouTube Short in YouTube Studio (desktop)
These steps follow YouTube's own instructions for scheduling a video, which apply to Shorts too.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create, then Upload videos, and pick your vertical video file.
- Fill in the Details: title, description, thumbnail (where available) and the "made for kids" question, which YouTube requires for every video.
- Move through Video elements and Checks. Checks will flag copyright problems before the video goes live, which is one more reason to upload a day or two early.
- On the Visibility step, open the Schedule card.
- Set the date, the time and the time zone.
- Press Schedule.
The video now sits as private and turns public at your chosen time. You can see it under Content in Studio with a "Scheduled" label.
Changing or cancelling a scheduled Short
In YouTube Studio, open Content, pick the video, go to Visibility, and either choose a new time under Schedule or set it to Public to publish straight away. YouTube also notes that the "Published on" date shown on the watch page is based on Pacific time, so it can look a day off if you schedule from a time zone well ahead of the US West Coast (YouTube Help).
Uploading several Shorts at once
YouTube Studio lets you select up to 15 short videos in one upload (YouTube Help). Each one opens as a draft. Go through them one by one and give each its own scheduled time. This is the fastest native way to batch a week of Shorts.
Can you schedule Shorts from the YouTube mobile app?
YouTube says the scheduling steps can also be done in the YouTube app (YouTube Help), and many creators do. Menus on mobile change more often than in Studio, so if you cannot find the option, upload from your phone as private and set the schedule later in YouTube Studio on a computer. The result is the same.
Does scheduling a Short hurt its reach?
There is no evidence that it does. A scheduled Short is published the same way as one you post by hand; the only difference is when it goes public. What affects reach is the video itself: the first second, whether people watch to the end, and whether they replay or share it.
What scheduling does help with is consistency. It is much easier to keep a steady rhythm of three Shorts a week when they are recorded and queued in one sitting than when each one depends on a free moment.
When should you use a scheduler instead of YouTube Studio?
YouTube Studio is enough if YouTube is your only short-video channel. A scheduler starts to pay for itself when:
- The same clip goes to several networks. Most creators and small businesses post one vertical video to YouTube Shorts, TikTok, Instagram Reels and sometimes LinkedIn. Uploading it four times, writing four captions and setting four schedules adds up.
- Someone else needs to approve it. If a client, manager or co-founder signs off on posts, a shared calendar with approvals beats sending video files over chat.
- You want one calendar. Seeing Shorts next to your LinkedIn posts, Google Business Profile updates and newsletters makes gaps and clashes obvious.
- You post in batches. Recording five videos on Monday and queuing them in ten minutes is the whole point of batching. Our guide to bulk scheduling social posts covers the routine.
How to schedule YouTube Shorts with Social9
Social9 uploads videos and Shorts straight to your YouTube channel, alongside the other networks you post to. Here is the flow:
- Connect your channel. Go to Channels → YouTube → Connect channel and sign in with Google. If your channel is a Brand Account, pick the channel's name on the Google screen, not your personal profile. The YouTube setup guide covers the details, including who is allowed to connect a Brand Account.
- Create the post. Upload one vertical video. The post text becomes the YouTube description (up to 5,000 characters).
- Turn on "This is a Short". In Options for YouTube, switch on This is a Short. Fill in the title (up to 100 characters; if you leave it empty, the first line of your text is used) and answer the "made for kids" question.
- Pick extra options if you want them. Visibility, tags, category, playlist, a first comment, a captions file, and the label YouTube asks for on realistic AI-generated or altered content.
- Let YouTube publish it on time. With Let YouTube publish it at the scheduled time on, Social9 uploads the video a little early as private and YouTube makes it public at your time, so a slow upload never makes it late.
- Add the other networks. Tick TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn or any other connected account on the same post. Each network gets its own options, and Social9's AI can write a different caption for each one in your brand voice.
If YouTube's daily upload limit for your channel is used up, Social9 tries again later by itself, and failed-post alerts tell you if something needs your attention. YouTube is available on the Individual plan and up; see pricing for what each plan includes.
A simple weekly Shorts routine
| When | What | Time |
|---|
| Monday | Record 3 to 5 Shorts in one session (same setup, different hooks) | 45 min |
| Monday | Upload, write titles, schedule across the week | 15 min |
| Daily | Reply to comments on yesterday's Short | 5 min |
| Friday | Look at which Short kept viewers longest and plan more like it | 10 min |
Some ideas that work well as Shorts for small businesses: a 30-second "how we make it", a common customer question answered in one breath, a before and after, a quick tip from your trade, and a clip cut from a longer video. If you publish long videos, follow your channel feed in Social9's RSS and YouTube feeds so each new upload also becomes a post on your other networks.
Common mistakes when scheduling Shorts
- Exporting at 16:9. A horizontal video will not be treated as a Short, whatever you call it.
- Going over three minutes. Trim it, or it will be published as a regular video.
- Unchecked music. A copyright claim on a Short over one minute blocks it. Let YouTube's Checks finish before the scheduled time.
- Burying the hook. Titles matter less on Shorts than the first second of the video. Start with the most interesting frame.
- Posting in bursts. Ten Shorts in one day and nothing for a month teaches neither your audience nor you anything. A steady rhythm does.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you schedule YouTube Shorts for free?
Yes. YouTube Studio lets you schedule any video, including Shorts, at no cost. Upload the video, open the Schedule card on the Visibility step, and choose a date, time and time zone.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
Up to three minutes, with a square or vertical aspect ratio, for videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 on standard channels, according to YouTube's Help Center.
Why is my scheduled Short not showing as a Short?
Usually the video is horizontal or longer than three minutes. Check the aspect ratio of your export and the length, then upload again.
Can I schedule one video to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels together?
Not from YouTube Studio, which only covers YouTube. A scheduler such as Social9 lets you upload the video once, set options for each network and schedule it to all of them in one post.
Does a scheduled Short get less reach than one posted live?
No evidence suggests so. YouTube publishes a scheduled video the same way as one you post by hand. The content and how long people watch matter far more than how it was published.
