Microsoft to shut down Internet Explorer and legacy Edge: support ends in 2021
Microsoft's pulling the plug on Internet Explorer 11, and it's happening in stages. They're ending support for IE11 across all their Microsoft 365 apps and services – think Office 365, OneDrive, Outlook, the whole shebang – on August 17, 2021.
Now, before that big date, they already stopped supporting IE11 with the Microsoft Teams web app. That went away on November 30, 2020. So yeah, Teams was kinda the first to go.
For businesses still clinging to IE11, Microsoft knows it's a bit of a jump to a new browser. To help out, they've built this cool "Internet Explorer legacy mode" right into the new Chromium-based Microsoft Edge. This means you can still get to those old websites that only work with IE, at least until Microsoft finally ditches IE11 completely from Windows 10.
They're really pushing folks to use Microsoft Edge, which makes sense. Back in early 2020, Microsoft announced the new Microsoft Edge and Bing. Edge is just way better, you know? It's faster, more secure, and works with all the modern web stuff that IE just can't handle anymore. It's got better privacy features too, and it's just generally a smoother experience.
