What is Instagram Reels?

Facebook-owned Instagram on has launched Reels, a feature within the photo and video sharing app that allows users to post short videos and songs.

It’s not Facebook’s first attempt to make its own TikTok-type features. In 2018, Facebook has launched a short-form video app called Lasso, which it shut down in July, and haven't got much popularity.

They launched a video app Collab, which allows users to take audio from others and record on top of it, in May 2020 on an invite-only basis.

The Reels option is available in the Instagram camera at the same place as the Boomerang, rewind video, slo-mo, and more. Instagram’s latest video feature is now available in the United States and 50 other countries.

Users will have to open the Instagram camera and the select Reels to start churning out 15-second videos. Similarly Like TikTok, Reels gives options to use audio from Instagram Music library, speed, effects, and timer.

Post recording of a Reel, users can choose the target audience they want to share with and unlike Instagram Stories, Reels can also be shared in the Explore section which will then be allowed to be viewed by everyone on the platform.

Reels also feature several AR effects allowing users to add a custom touch to their videos. To put AR effects in their videos, users can open Reels camera and go to effects and then AR effects.

Users will also be able to record multiple 15 seconds Reels - it can also be recorded at once and the different effects can be added to each clip post the shoot. The Reels can also be reviewed, deleted, and re-recorded.

Instagram Reels also gets a ‘Use Audio’ option allowing others to use your original audio to create their Reels. Instagram Reels has its own version of the For You page: the new Reels Explore Feed. You can find the Reels feed on the Instagram Explore Page.

Instead of only seeing Reels from accounts you follow as you scroll, you will see Reels from popular and trending accounts on Instagram.

While the Reels algorithm hasn’t been locked down yet, it feels similar to the TikTok For You page. It’s likely influenced by who you already follow, what content you interact with, and where you’re located.

How to create Instagram Reels

  1. Go to the Instagram camera and select Reels at the bottom
  2. Tap on Audio option and select a song using the Instagram music library
  3. You can use original audio by simply recording a Reel using the audio
  4. Add AR Effect which will make your Reel interesting and set the timer as well to record any of your clips hands-free.
  5. Users will also get an option to speed up or slow down part of the video or audio.
